The voice of the young diplomats – CWMUN BCN18

This past weekend at St Peter´s School we hosted the CWMUN Barcelona 2018. In collaboration with Associazione Diplomatici we managed to bring more than 200 students from around the world. The Change the World Model United Nations take place in New York (in the same headquarters of the United Nations), Rome, Dubai and Barcelona. Its objective is to promote strategy skills, leadership, problem solving, negotiation skills, public speaking, diplomacy and consensus in future citizens who will be able to change the world.

The experience this year in Barcelona started with team work activities just to warm up for a weekend full of negotiation and debate. Communication and leadership skills were pushed to the limit through out many tasks they have to complete.

Divided between a general council and four security councils the young delegates have to defend the position of the countries they represent. Adopting the role of real diplomats, they will create strategies, find allies and finally come to resolutions for some of the worlds biggest concerns. The main theme of the general council was the regulation of the use of cannabis for non-medicinal purposes. This issue will be addressed in the General Assembly and corresponds to the agenda of the International Narcotic Control Board (UN INCB). In parallel, the security committees will work on additional topics: use of communication technologies by terrorist groups; the threat of nuclear weapons and the international response to the tests carried out in the Democratic Republic of Korea; the Mediterranean crisis of refugees; and, finally, the threat to world peace caused by terrorism.

Even though the difference in culture, language and opinion the young delegates can all join together in the same rhythm, building relationships and living this unforgettable experience.

The CWMUN BCN 2018 was a great success and a wonderful experience. A special thanks to Universitat Abat Oliba for hosting the opening ceremony, and to all the participants. See you next year!!
